Overflowing Life

September 6, 2019

The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows]. John 10:10 AMP

1. WHY WE NEED IT. Jesus is both the source and sustainer of abundant life. When He showed up on earth, the Roman Empire was in decline and had become enmeshed with hedonism and paganism. As a result, life was empty. In the Jewish religious community things had become a bit dry and there was some hollowness in all the ritualism and law keeping. Jesus came to earth at the perfect time to bring hope to a lost and diseased world. He showed a way of life that was so much better than anything in existence. And that same overflowing life is available to us today.

Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:37-38

2. JUST RECEIVE IT. Nothing will satisfy like Jesus. God has set eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11). Blaise Pascal, the French philosopher, said that the abyss in us can only be filled by an “infinite and immutable object, that is to say, only by God Himself.” Wherever you’re at right now, Jesus is throwing a lifeline to you – He came to seek and save you (Luke 19:10). He cares about you more than anyone else does, and He has a plan for your life. Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13).

3. THEN YOU CAN GIVE IT. Christianity is full of vibrancy and power. We’re created in Christ for good works (Ephesians 2:10). Where the devil is trying to diminish you and blunt you, God is coming in to sustain and strengthen you so you can overflow in abundant life to the people God has purposed for you to help and reach.
He that refreshes others shall himself be refreshed (Proverbs 11:25 NIV).

Daily Confession:
I joyously draw water from the wells of salvation. My mouth is filled with God’s praise all day long today. My cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. (Isaiah 12:3; Psalm 71:8; Psalm 23:5-6)

o·ver·flow, verb
To have a boundless supply; be superabundant. To flow or run over the top, brim, or banks.
