JESUS – THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE

July 28, 2025

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” John 14:6

1. THE WAY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE. As a teenager, I was hitchhiking home from my restaurant job and got a ride home from a Vietnam vet. He told me that he had been dishonorably discharged for heroin addiction but that “Jesus changed my life.” I told him I believed there were many paths to God. He said, “I used to believe that too. But Jesus said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Me (John 14:6).’” That scripture opened my eyes to who Jesus really is – He is the way out of problems and into the truth.

2. A TRUTH THAT PIERCED MY HEART. That moment is as vivid and real to me now as it was then. It was like an arrow of certainty pierced through my confusion. I was struck by the vet’s confidence – and a little annoyed by how exclusive it sounded. Growing up in Southern California with so many spiritual options, I didn’t understand how definitive and unique Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection were. But later I came to see that He is the truth – the opposite of error or falsehood.

3. THE LIFE JESUS HAS FOR US. Jesus is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). He calls us out of fear, bland mediocrity, and futility into purpose. Even though the world lies under the power of the evil one (1 John 5:19), Jesus came to break that cycle (John 10:10). Peter said it best: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life” (John 6:68).
