GOD’S WILL BE DONE
May 15, 2026Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9-10
1. GO TO GOD. “Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the counsel of the Lord will stand” (Proverbs 19:21). My dad was a gardener, and he would have my brother and me help him make the best of the sandy, rocky Southern California soil. One thing he did was create a screen that acted as a filter, and we would shovel the dirt through it to sift out the gravel, roots, and things he didn’t want. Think of your plans as the dirt that must be screened through God’s filter. We could do this, or we could do that, but when we put our plans through the filtration of “not my will, but God’s will be done,” we can get to the heart of what God is saying about our lives.
2. REALIGN WITH HIS ORIGINAL PLANS FOR YOUR PERSONAL LIFE. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Stay tender before God. When it’s just you and God lay your plans down before Him and ask: “what was I created for?” Check in with Him and recalibrate.
3. MAKE SURE ALL YOU DO IS BIBLICAL. “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). Make sure it lines up with the Old and New Testaments and trust God for correct biblical interpretation.
4. ASK YOURSELF: “CAN THIS BE DONE IN THE NAME OF JESUS?” “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Colossians 2:6). If you can put the Name of Jesus on something, it’s a good thing. Use this as a test for your decisions, actions, and words.
In the in-between seasons of my young adult life, I remember people constantly asking me, “What are you going to do?” I developed an answer: “God has a plan.” Whatever your stage of life – whether you are a graduating student, a new retiree, a newlywed, a parent, or starting a different career – God has wisdom and a plan for you.
5. REALIZE YOU CAN AND WILL BE OPPOSED. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). Knowing that the devil will oppose God’s plan for your life helps you not be idealistic about resistance on your journey.
6. LEARN TO OVERCOME. “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). In Jesus we learn to overcome every obstacle – which speaks of trusting God, using our shield of faith, having biblical tenacity, and persevering.
7. TAKE ACTION. “‘All this,’ said David, ‘the Lord made me understand in writing by His hand upon me, all the details of this pattern.’ Then David said to his son Solomon, ‘Be strong and courageous, and act; do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished'” (1 Chronicles 28:19-20). First, God downloaded the details of the plan to David, and then it was time to take action. God is the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). He will see you through till the work is finished.
8. PRESS ON. “I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14). God has a plan, an intended course of action for our lives. Bottom line, there are many needs and opportunities, but we are to be led only by the Holy Spirit. And when He authors something, it will sustain and last. And as we remain submitted to His primary purposes, yield, and make mid-course corrections, we can press on with confidence.
