The Value of Serving

July 1, 2016

So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them. But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:42-45 NLT

1. SERVE THROUGH LOVE. (Galatians 5:13b) The only time in the Bible we are told to compete with others is to outdo one another in showing honor (Romans 12:10). We are going to win the world not by flashy methods or by prowess or by badgering people, but by showing our care and love for them. So let’s get up every day and figure out how to serve others.

2. SERVE WITH GLADNESS. (Psalm 100:2) When we choose to walk in joy, strength will follow. We are at our best when we humble ourselves and serve not as doormats but with all our hearts, in the strength of joy and gladness.

3. SERVE WITH FAITHFULNESS. Jesus doesn’t condemn the desire to be significant. In fact, He teaches us the way to do it: the path to greatness is found in servanthood. Don’t be afraid that serving people will make you less esteemed or that others will misinterpret your standing. When you are faithful in the small things, in the seemingly menial things, God will expand opportunities for you. At the end of our lives we should long to hear these words from Jesus: “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

God bless you!
