THE HOLISTIC CALL OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

May 16, 2025

But the greatest among you shall be your servant. Matthew 23:11

1. GOD SETS THE EXAMPLE AS BOTH SERVANT AND KING. The greatest aspect of our existence is that we be servants. The greatest in the kingdom is servant of all. Jesus didn’t come to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45). I anticipate the marriage supper of the Lamb in heaven, where Jesus – the King worthy of all love, honor, praise, and glory – will serve us (Luke 12:37; Revelation 19:7-9). On one hand, we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God showing him deep respect. On the other, as dearly beloved children, we cry out, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). It’s not contradictory – it is holistic.

2. GOD AS OUR FATHER IS HELPING US MATURE. My stepdad adopted me and raised me. He was my dad. I didn’t meet my biological father until I was in my thirties, and we only spent five days together before he passed. My dad corrected me as a child. As I matured, he coached me – guiding me into independence so I could one day lead my own family. Later, our relationship changed more into friendship, yet I always honored him. In the same way, God invites us to grow. We are co-laborers, joint heirs, part of His body (Romans 8:17). He shares His purposes with us. The Christian life is both vast and intricate. It is something a child can grasp but a genius can’t fully comprehend.

For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building. 1 Corinthians 3:9

3. WALK BOLDLY AS CO-LABORERS. We are invited to draw near to God both as children and to also stand beside Him as co-laborers. We are called to show forth His excellencies, to step out in faith, trust Him for the miraculous, and believe He answers our prayers. Lay hands on the sick. Share the gospel. Encourage the fainthearted. Press on toward the goal of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

DEFINITION:
fel·low-work·er
(Greek: sunĕrgŏs), noun
A co-laborer – companion in labour, helper, workfellow, labourer together.

PRAY THIS OUT LOUD:
Father, thank You for opening doors. Thank You for calling me into effective service (1 Corinthians 16:9). I humble myself under Your mighty hand and come boldly to You as Your child. Help me honor You with reverence, walk in obedience, and trust You completely. Help me be bold – to lay hands on the sick, share the gospel with the lost, and encourage the fainthearted. Strengthen me to press on toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Amen.
