Steps to Overcoming Depression

September 18, 2015

TAKE CARE OF THE WHOLE PERSON. The prophet Elijah took a stand and brought reform at a time when society had gone crazy. Yet, between great breakthroughs he got discouraged and depressed. God directed Elijah to sleep, eat, and drink water. When you get worn down, it’s important to address both your practical needs and your spiritual needs.

He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and he said to him, “Arise, eat.” Then he looked and behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. 1 Kings 19:5-6

FIND GOD’S PROMISES. The biblical promises of God, when acted upon correctly, bring breakthrough. Write down what you are dealing with. Then find scriptures correlating to those problems and write them down too. One day you will look back and see lists of miracles—those things that seemed impossible until God turned them around.

Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” says the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 4:6b

KEEP PRAISING GOD. Though we live an earthly life we do not wage an earthly war (Ephesians 6:12). God inhabits the praises of His people, and when we praise Him, things change! This world needs us to shake off the heaviness and fight in the Spirit by singing praises to God.

Pray this prayer:
God, I praise You right now. You came to bind up the brokenhearted and save the crushed in spirit (Isaiah 61:3; Psalm 34:18). I believe You for breakthrough on all fronts of my life: in my relationships, my work, my finances, and my future. You have lifted me out of the pit and set my feet upon a rock, making my footsteps firm (Psalm 40:2). Thank You, Jesus, for breakthrough! Amen.

Praise, verb
To express thanks to or love and respect for God.
