EIGHT QUALITIES OF GOD’S CHARACTER
May 9, 2025GREAT is the Lord, and highly to be praised, and His greatness is unsearchable. On the GLORIOUS splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate. The Lord is GRACIOUS and MERCIFUL; slow to anger and great in LOVINGKINDNESS. Psalm 145:3,5,8
In the Psalms, we see David go from minor keys of sorrow and repentance to joyful notes of redemption and restoration. Here are eight characteristics of who God is found in Psalm 145.
1. HE IS GREAT. God is worthy of our adoration and focus. He is to be primary in our lives and reverenced above all. Everything else is secondary (1 Chronicles 16:25). Let’s bump Him up in priority. Let’s make Him our number one focus.
2. HE IS GLORIOUS. The Hebrew definition of this word defines glorious as something of weight. Second Corinthians 4:17 talks about “an eternal weight of glory.” Unlike gold jewelry filled with resin that feels heavy but is not pure gold, God is 100% solid, weighty with true value.
3. HE IS GRACIOUS. The dictionary defines this word as, “Characterized by kindness and warm courtesy. Disposed to show kindness or favor.” God will surround you with favor (Psalm 5:12). Favor is not deserved or earned. Because God is gracious, He will open doors and bless you wherever you go.
4. HE IS GREAT IN LOVINGKINDNESS. The Hebrew word for lovingkindness – hesed – means God’s obligatory loyal love. It is a beautiful prelude to the golden rule that Jesus laid out that we should do unto others as we would have them do unto us (Matthew 7:12).
The Lord is GOOD to all, and His mercies are over all His works. The Lord is RIGHTEOUS in all His ways and KIND in all His deeds. The Lord is NEAR to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. Psalm 145:9,17,18
5. HE IS GOOD. God is happy to bless you. He knows the guilt and condemnation that Satan is accusing us with night and day, and He has intentionally delivered us. God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting our trespasses against us (2 Corinthians 5:19).
6. HE IS RIGHTEOUS. You can trust that God will never do anything bad or wrong. He has a righteous plan for your life and a righteous plan for your generation. My Bible says that the whole earth will be filled with the knowledge of God’s glory in every place (Habakkuk 2:14). He does things right. He does all things well.
7. HE IS KIND. God is the opposite of mean. It is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4). Kindness is not to be confused with just niceness. It is a powerful fruit of the Spirit, and we can grow in it and emulate God’s example (Galatians 5:22-23).
8. HE IS NEAR. The nearness of God is our good (Psalm 73:28). If you feel like you haven’t been in fellowship with God lately, you can just repent and draw near this moment by calling out to Him! When we draw near to God, He draws near to us (James 4:8).
The whole world is skewed, and humanity is on a minor key, but Jesus came with thunderous, good, happy notes of blessing, of redemption, and grace.
SAY THIS OUT LOUD:
GREAT are YOU Lord, and highly to be praised and Your greatness is unsearchable. On the GLORIOUS splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate. Lord, You are GRACIOUS and MERCIFUL; slow to anger and great in LOVINGKINDNESS. You are GOOD to all – that means me – and Your mercies are over all Your works. You are RIGHTEOUS in all Your ways and KIND in all Your deeds. Lord, You are NEAR when I call upon You in truth. (Psalm 145)
