HOW TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS

December 5, 2025

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

1. GET IN THE WORD. One time as a young man, I was at a crossroads of decision-making in my life and I didn’t know where to go with it. Should I do this or should I do that? While cosidering my choices, I heard good teaching from a minister. He said if you want God’s will, do something called, “double up on the Divider.” That intrigued me, and it’s based on the Scripture Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit…” Basically, he was saying to get in the Word. And that the Word would make distinction between the spirit, the mind, and the flesh.

2. TAKE TIME TO FAST AND PRAY. There were three things I was dealing with where I needed discernment – one about parenting, one about moving out of apartment living into a first home purchase, and one about a challenging issue with a coworker. My first daughter’s birthday fell at a certain point where we had to decide whether to put her in kindergarten a little early so she would be the youngest in her class, or delay till the next year. God gave us brains so we could think, but at the end of the day I couldn’t work it all out in the constructs of my logic as a young person with limited life experience. So, I took my Bible and a 10-speed bike, and my wife dropped me off at a local inexpensive hotel by a lake. I fasted and prayed. I doubled up on the Divider. I remember sitting at a picnic bench by that lake, telling God that I felt so much pressure as a dad because my decision was going to determine so much of her future. For all three things, I cast my cares on the Lord.

3. REAP THE RESULTS OF DISCERNMENT. God gave me wisdom. But as is often the case with fasting, it was a seed sown, and it needed to germinate a little bit. Within a few days, God sorted out the conflict I had with that coworker in a beautiful way. God provided our first home, and it was exactly what we had prayed for. And God showed me when to start my daughter in school. Fast forward to her senior year in high school – she was the class president. She gave a speech at her graduation from Ecclesiastes to five thousand people in a big arena. And I thought back to how God sorted those areas out and got those logjams broken. God has discernment and wisdom for every area of your life. Double up on the Divider. Fast and pray. And you will have God’s wisdom and make amazing choices!
