The Power of Unity

August 5, 2016

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard, coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon coming down upon the mountains of Zion; for there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever. Psalm 133

1. THE PRINCIPLE OF UNITY. Unity creates strength. This is a law like gravity—it works for both the just and the unjust. In the Old Testament we see unity being used for evil purposes in building the Tower of Babel. When God saw what the people were doing, He said, “Now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them” (Genesis 11:6b). If even evil agendas can use the power of unity to advance their causes, how much more can the godly advance when we unite under the direction of the Holy Spirit.

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32

2. THE ANOINTING OF UNITY. When Moses’ brother, Aaron, became High Priest, he was anointed with oil. Unity is like that oil that represents the anointing of the Holy Spirit. It eliminates friction, stops sparks from flying, keeps things from sticking. Decide to forgive quickly and repent quickly—it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Get strife out of your life so that the greater presence of God can flow through you.

3. THE PURPOSE OF UNITY. Our purpose as both a church and individuals is to champion the good news of Jesus in a culture that has gone completely whack. Don’t cheapen a moment of breakthrough with a moment of strife. Lay aside strife and work hard to maintain the love walk, and you will see the plan of God come to pass.
