The Secret Place

August 4, 2014

But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. Matthew 6:6

Activity and achievement are not the same thing. Activity can cause us to forget that the best part of Christianity is Jesus. Before the fall of man, Adam and Eve walked and talked with God in the cool of the day (Genesis 3:8). That’s what Jesus is inviting us to now—closeness and connection with Him.

This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. Joshua 1:8

You can change people’s lives from your prayer closet—your front porch, the living room, the clothes closet. Put away your phone and draw near to God. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, let all the lesser voices back off, and focus on the goodness of God. When you read the Word, let it get into you. Meditate on a fixed scripture for a period of time. Ponder it, absorb it down into your insides—marinate in it, steep in it.

Pray This Prayer
Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul. (Psalm 54:4). One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to meditate in His temple. When You said, “Seek My face,” my heart said to You, “Your face, O Lord, I shall seek.” (Psalm 27:4, 8).

“It will cost something to walk slow in the parade of the ages, while excited men of time rush about confusing motion with progress. But it will pay in the long run, and the true Christian is not much interested in anything short of that.” —A.W. Tozer (1897-1963), pastor; written June 3, 1950.

God bless you!
